Route 192 is its own thing, and you can’t find that anywhere else. The colors and shapes of the buildings, the way that all the small businesses in a way feed off of the parks and sort of rip off the themes of Disney – you’re not going to find that anywhere else.

When I look back over my novels what I find is that when I think I’m finished with a theme, I’m generally not. And usually themes will recur from novel to novel in odd, new guises.

It’s just hard. I wish the studios felt there was more value in these themes and these pieces of material – that they’re worth protecting more. Because then it just wouldn’t happen. If the studios cared, the stuff would be stopped in a second.
I’m always writing across the same themes. But with short stories, I’m doing something different than with novels. In some ways, they’re coming from a much deeper place.
‘Hill St.’ was very good, but it was very impersonal work for me. I wrote about that place as if I was a visitor. It wasn’t what my life was like. It was a great place to learn the craft of how to shape a scene, but I wanted a chance to write about more personal themes and obsessions.
I found it amazing people can think that art must be connected to religion. Religion may give art themes, but there would still be art without religion. Bach is not proof that art exists.

Interest in certain themes doesn’t mandate a personal stake or personal experience of those themes. I’ve killed people in plays, but no one asks me what it’s like to kill people.
The mere existence of ‘Buffy’ proves the declinists wrong about one thing: Hollywood commercialism can produce great art. Complex and evolving characters. Playful language. Joy and sorrow, pathos and elation. Episodes that dare to be different – to tell stories in silence or in song. Big themes and terrible choices.
I don’t consciously go out looking for themes. They attach themselves to me.

One of the big themes – if not the big theme – of ‘Mockingjay – Part 1’ is the battle of the airwaves. I don’t think teenagers really understand the role propaganda has in our lives in terms of politics, advertising, and the general manipulation of imagery.
I’m starting to realise that there are certain themes that I return to, those being that there is no such thing as normal, and people finding their voice and living authentically. And also that you can be influenced and helped through an extended family.

The themes and ideas embedded in ‘Into the Woods’ always spoke to me.
You never make all things for all people and can’t always pander to the broadest denominator. I keep an eye toward doing the themes that interest me. Do they move me? Interest me? Make me think? When I run across something that is provocative in an unsettling way, it appeals to me.
There is more to Indian cinema than just Bollywood. I think regional cinema, especially Tamil and Marathi cinema, are exploring some really bold themes.

The fantastic thing about ‘Jasper Jones’ is that although it’s set in 1969, the themes are still so topical. We’re still struggling with racism and sexism and domestic violence and abuse.
Everyone asks me, ‘Why do you choose such subversive or shocking themes?’ but when I’m alone in my office, I’m not like, ‘OK I’m going to shock.’ I want to write about a character who fascinates me, someone who I don’t understand.
The body of work I create combines traditional storylines and postmodern narrative strategies to approach themes such as belonging, identity politics and conflict, as well as the push towards – and resistance against – modernization.
I’m always writing something. I’ve got so much stuff, I don’t know what to do with it. Some of it will be Strokes, some of it will be I don’t know what – stuff for pop singers. TV themes. I’ve got a jar stuffed with songs, all these ideas that are just me humming into a recording device.
Any underrepresented audience loves to see themselves on TV, but what’s more important is that we’re writing about universal themes – good versus evil, can you change yourself? These themes resonate for everyone.
In my writing with Extreme, there are heavy themes. The cover photo has me with a gun to my neck. I am not advocating suicide. I am taking the philosophy that man is the measure of his own fate.
‘I Am Number Four’ definitely borrows from a whole bunch of genres and has a whole bunch of different themes throughout. And I think if it was just one stale two-dimensional thing then it would be kind of boring. And I think they did a fantastic job.

Too many politicians are shifting the critical themes of our national conversations from a ‘big ideas’ American Brand Platform to narrowly focused, polarizing sound bites that put party philosophy before what used to be heralded as the common good. These ideas, more often than not, divide us rather than serve to bind us.
I always thought of vampires, especially the young-adult ones, as a metaphor for sex – sucking blood, forbidden, taboo. I think they just ooze sex. Vampires are all the big themes in life in one attractive, bloodsucking package.
I also believe that you are what you have to defend, and if you’re a black man that’s always going to be the bar against which you are judged, whether you want to align yourself with those themes or not. You can think of yourself as a colourless person, but nobody else is gonna.
What I write is very personal, but not autobiographical. It’s more ‘thematically personal’ – what’s up in my life in terms of themes at the moment.
There’s been a great development with scale on TV, but my approach is always the same across projects, whether it’s a video game, a movie, or a TV show: I always try to set up my sounds and my themes. I really try to stay with the characters and do the storytelling through the music.
Tribeca Film Festival Doha will promote Middle Eastern themes and filmmakers, but not exclusively. Approximately 40 films will be presented at the new Museum of Islamic Art and in cinemas across Doha. I usually give a book 40 pages. If it doesn’t grab me by then, adios. With young adult books, you can usually tell by Page 4 if it’s worth the time. There’s never really been a tradition of making films about Jewish themes or using Judaism as a constant.

One of the themes in my novels is that our crises can turn into blessings. We can feel like our world has crumbled, but ten years down the road when we look back on that time, we can see God’s hand at work. I love writing that theme into my books.
The problem with themes is that writers don’t realise they are themes until someone points them out.

The idea of the museum is to show my work since the start, and I wanted to show all of it, not just to choose between different pieces. They are grouped together in themes – minimalism, androgyny, black and white, graphic, flowers, and so on – from the earliest designs to the most recent ones.

Yes, I’ve heard of the ‘Mad Men’ comparisons, but I like to think ‘The Hour’ has its own distinctive voice. Although it is set in 1956, I have tried to give it a contemporary edge, and its themes of love, passion, romance, fury, professional jealousy, and personal failure are universal, I think.
You have to think of your brand as a kind of myth. A myth is a compelling story that is archetypal, if you know the teachings of Carl Jung. It has to have emotional content and all the themes of a great story: mystery, magic, adventure, intrigue, conflicts, contradiction, paradox.
Sam Peckinpah’s movies probably say more about him than anybody’s body of work says about that person. There are running themes in his films that I find eminently fascinating, disturbing, exhausting, and exhilarating.

Along the way I have been able to choose some themes which ask questions – not necessarily force a message on anyone, but at least invite the audience to question things: jury service, dignity in dying, Ireland – and not least because they force me to ask myself questions. Where do I stand?

There is no reason why challenging themes and engaging stories have to be mutually exclusive – in fact, each can fuel the other. As a filmmaker, I want to entertain people first and foremost. People like scary stories. There’s a fascination with fear themes, and we want to face those things in a weird, subconscious way.
I’ve always had the wish, the nostalgia to be able to write detective novels. At heart, the principal themes of detective novels are close to the things that obsess me: disappearance, the problems of identity, amnesia, the return to an enigmatic past.
One of the themes of ‘The Longest War,’ my book, which came out before the Arab spring happened, was how al-Qaida and bin Laden was losing the war of ideas in the Muslim world, not because the United States was winning them, but because al-Qaida was simply losing them.

I don’t think writers really choose their subjects. I think the subjects, the topics, the themes, choose us, and then we make the most of what we have. For Trollope, society; for Roth, Jews. For me, apparently, love. Why hide it?
But it’s much more exciting to make Die Hard. One of the reasons that I think that movie is so successful is it deals with those very important blue-collar relationship themes. But it’s more visually beautiful to show things blowing up. It just gives you more on the screen.
You have so much more time to observe and learn with a documentary because of the time between the shoots. You get a much deeper understanding of day-to-day life and its themes. I was the Playmate editor for ‘Playboy’ for two years. I produced two years’ worth of centerfolds. I did everything on that, from picking the girls to designing the sets to picking the wardrobe, coming up with themes, assigning the photographer, down to editing the photos and approving the retouching.
The whole thing about making films in an organic film on location is that it’s not all about characters, relationships and themes, it’s also about place and the poetry of place. It’s about the spirit of what you find, the accidents of what you stumble across.
Change and renewal are themes in life, aren’t they? We keep growing throughout life.
As a screen composer or film-music writer, I need something that I can work with in the body of the score. Like ‘Charade,’ ‘Moon River,’ ‘Wine and Roses,’ ‘Dear Heart’ – they were all just themes that grew out of the picture.
I don’t want to deal with big, grand themes in my stories; art has nothing to do with themes. When you deal with themes, you are not creating; you are lecturing.
Themes rise and fall. Kingdoms rise and fall. Religions rise and fall.
Is it good, bad, or neutral to recognize thematic patterns in your own work? When it comes to recurring themes, I’m of the mind that knowledge is probably not power, at least in terms of the work.
The stories are there first, and they come from my experiences wandering around in the world. They will resonate into bigger things, forces sweeping the planet, themes and archetypes, but I’m not smart enough to have lucid integration of all that in my head as I’m writing.
Country music tends to be so sentimental and homespun, it’s easy to stumble into self-parody, but Haggard has brought a freshness to the themes that places him alongside Hank Williams and Willie Nelson as one of the greatest country music writers.
If one wants to go on living, one must evolve. Before, when we composed, we would start by a series of music themes. Once created, we would hire writers and lyricists to make up the text and the story line. I was the first to do this backwards with ‘Man of La Mancha.’
They say great themes make great novels. but what these young writers don’t understand is that there is no greater theme than men and women.
I want to re-mythologize ‘The Green Hornet’ in a contemporary context, with an emphasis on story and character, while at the same time incorporating themes that speak to my heart.
Well the themes for me were and remain sex and love and grief and death – the things that make us and undo us, create and destroy, how we breed and disappear and the emotional context that surrounds these events.
I think vampires are different from human beings, but they’re sentenced to eternity on this planet. They have the same confusion about love and permanence, integrity, and denial. These qualities really are the same in vampire characters as in humans. I think they’re universal themes.
I think if you look at the themes that are presented in the film, some are inherently social, and I think that any film which deals with the family is dealing with the smallest social unit in our society – and in a sense it is a question of scope.
‘The Wizard of Oz’ and ‘Alice in Wonderland’ inspired me. I wanted to take those themes and try to bring it into a more 21st story with aliens.
In the household in which I was raised, the themes were pretty simple. ‘Work hard. Don’t quit. Be appreciative, be thankful, be grateful, be respectful. Also, never whine, never complain. And always, for crying out loud, keep a sense of humor.’
Faulkner speaks to us on the questions of race, the challenges of modernity, and modern man’s dilemma in all of its aspects. That he is able to specify among those and bring those themes alive is one of his great gifts. There are so many different kinds of pleasures one gets from encountering those materials.
Malayalis tend to be nostalgic about rustic storylines, pastoral themes and ordinary folk who lead a simple way of life.
In the century-long history of Chinese science fiction, apocalyptic themes were mostly absent. This was especially true in the period before the 1990s, when Chinese science fiction, isolated from the influence of the West, developed on its own.
I feel it’s our responsibility to keep our ear tuned to public discourse. There’s a lot of noise out there, and our responsibility is to pick up on the themes and issues that work their way through all of society.
Well, I never got into the young adult headspace. With ‘Twilight,’ they are pretty adult themes, aside from maybe the first one, but even that. They’re very adult themes, actually, particularly as the characters age. I never wrote for young adults. I wrote for myself, as an audience.
I like the idea of experimenting with all sorts of themes and just feeling free creatively.
Though many of Obsidian’s games have featured wry, sardonic humor, the developer has stuck to more serious fantasy and sci-fi themes.
I was making big paintings with mythological themes. When I started painting black figures, the white professors were relieved, and the black students were like, ‘She’s on our side.’ These are the kinds of issues that a white male artist just doesn’t have to deal with.
There are a number of parallels between the slums of Brazil and those found in my hometown, Karachi. The dichotomy that exists in Brazil is uncannily similar to that found in Pakistan, and I hope to one day make a film that follows similar themes.
I do read some of the scripts from America and, even though the themes or subject of the film is very interesting, and some of the scenes are very interesting, there is a tendency that they have to explain everything. There will be no dilemma.
Obviously, the ‘Rocky’ theme is one of the most recognizable themes in film.
But I’m a fairly mechanical worker – I tend not to think about themes so much as plot. I want to get the feeling right. If it’s moving through tunnels, I ask myself, what is it like to move through tunnels?
Fiscal responsibility and government reform are going to be good themes for governing, well at any time, but particularly coming out of a recovery.
My songs have always been frustrating themes, relationships that I’ve had. And now that I’m in love, I expect it to be really happy, or at least there won’t be half as much anger as there was.
I’m a big believer in ‘Trojan horses’ – There are certain themes that are more palatable when wrapped in something fun or distracting.

I started collecting aerial photographs of Native American and South Pacific architecture; only the African ones were fractal. And if you think about it, all these different societies have different geometric design themes that they use. So Native Americans use a combination of circular symmetry and fourfold symmetry.
I like to have recognizable themes and sounds that really connect to the project and that you can identify with that particular project. My goal is always, ‘When that theme comes on – even if you’re not in the room – you hear it and say, ‘Oh my show is starting, I gotta watch.’
I think as far as themes, ‘Hedwig’ is about what music meant to you as a kid and how rock n’ roll can save you; that is definitely part of it.

‘A Perfect Place’ is character-driven. The director for that wanted a couple of identifiable themes with a bunch of variations. That is what I did. The director for ‘The Solitude of Prime Numbers’ did not want that at all.
It is a very beautiful story, ‘The Crow.’ It is a very tragic story with huge emotional themes.
‘Zero Dark Thirty’ is a great piece of filmmaking and does a valuable public service by raising difficult questions most Hollywood movies shy away from, but as of this writing, it seems that one of its central themes – that torture was instrumental to tracking down bin Laden – is not supported by the facts.
I feel that people really feel they’ve got a part of me when they listen to my albums and the themes just show themselves.
