In a world as competitive as ours, the child who does not get a decent education is condemned to the fringes of society. I think all Australians agree that this is intolerable. We exalted that Michael Phelps-consecrated water. Rose petals were strewn in Peyton Manning’s path when he retired. But hey, that’s natural. As we should, we admire those in any craft, no less so in sports, who appear out of nowhere to achieve remarkable feats.
Theatre sports is the best improv training period.
At school I hated swimming and felt bigger and more self-conscious than all the other girls – and I would go to summer sports camps to desperately try to change my shape so that it couldn’t be one of the taunts aimed at me by bullies.
Professional sports is a business.
Only God can save Indian sports.
I tried golf for a while, but I wasn’t very good at it, so I didn’t play a lot of golf. I enjoy all sports, not just football. I like basketball, baseball, and I got into the World Cup. So really, sports in general are my life, and football specifically.
I lived in a town of 400 until I was like nine or ten. My dad coached all the sports – he was a gym teacher and health teacher for grades K-12.
I think it is fine to have sports divided into men’s and women’s, just as it is fine to say a fifteen-year-old is incapable of consenting to sex. But we should recognize these are social distinctions based on biology, and not categories foisted upon us by nature.
I always played sports when I was young. I played football and baseball for eight years. I loved football.
The most important thing you learn as a sports photographer is anticipation – not where the action is taking place, but where it’s going to take place. Not where the subject is now, but where they’re going to be.
You win some, lose some, and wreck some.
Other people need to be forward thinkers. Not just basketball players. Not just people in the sports world. But people in general.

The growth of women’s soccer and women’s sports all around the world has been slow.
People here don’t identify themselves by their sports team.
I started playing ball when I was a kid. My dad was a pro ball player and he passed on his knowledge to me.
Competitive people, especially in sports, want to learn about everything. So when you’re interested in something, you become a bit obsessive. You start to research it and ask questions about it, and before you know it, you have a serious hobby because of how you’re programmed.
I overcame size with mechanics.
I’m thrilled, I’m grateful, I’m blessed. I played for the world’s greatest professional sports team in history. Once a Dallas Cowboy, always a Dallas Cowboy.

These days the temptation to use steroids in sports has become too great for many young athletes.
When I get into a bad mood, I do sports and then everything’s OK. And then I go and make decisions, however painful they may be.

Sports federations must try to be professional in trying to market their sport.
My fear is with the onset of mainstream interest in extreme sports that diversity will be subdued and eventually snubbed out within our great outdoor community. Shouldn’t we question when the leaders of our community try to manipulate our culture into a mono crop?
All of the sports have a safety net, but boxing is the only sport that has none. So when the fighter is through, he is through. While he was fighting his management was very excited for him, but now that he is done, that management team is moving on.
Baseball is only a game, a game of inches and a lot of luck. During a time of all-out war, sports are very insignificant.

A rabid sports fan is one that boos a TV set.
When I was at the ‘Philadelphia Inquirer,’ I was promoted nine times in my first 13 years. I ultimately went from general assignment to beats on St. Joe’s and Temple, to backup writer, to NBA writer, to NBA columnist, to, ultimately, in 2003, to general sports columns.

I’m not buddy-buddy with the players. If they need a buddy, let them buy a dog.
For me, it is about creating a career – I’m very interested in the sports side and want to continue to do more stuff in that. But ultimately, what I consider myself to be is an actor, and the more variety I can play will continue to round me out.
I grew up playing sports. There is a clear line between success and failure.
If there was a template for success in sports, everyone would follow it. You do the best you can and trust the people you trust.

Oh, ‘Sports Night’ was tough because ‘Sports Night’ was… Well, you know, it’s like Mamet. It’s Sorkin. And I didn’t realize that you had to immediately be off of the other actors’ last line in their dialogue.
Don’t play too much golf. Two rounds a day are plenty.

In 1964, when Lee Iacocca said, ‘Shelby, I want you to make a sports car out of the Mustang,’ the first thing I said was, ‘Lee, you can’t make a race horse out of a mule. I don’t want to do it.’ He said, ‘I didn’t ask you to make it; you work for me.’
We grew up in the Rose Park section of Salt Lake City. It’s a good neighborhood but a tough one, on the poor side but proud. Sports are big. You learn to fight.

As you become a legend in the game, you build more doubters than you build supporters. And that’s fine. I think that comes with anything that’s challenging. I think it even comes with sports. The older that Michael Jordan got, I think the more doubted he became.
Perhaps the single most important element in mastering the techniques and tactics of racing is experience. But once you have the fundamentals, acquiring the experience is a matter of time.

Sports are a microcosm of society.
We all have limitations. I don’t have the right genes to be an Olympic weightlifter. I don’t have the right genetics to be an Olympic sprinter. Or gymnast. Sure, if I trained my whole life, perhaps I could have become fairly decent in those sports.
I’m really into extreme sports and just having fun.
Most ball games are lost, not won.
I don’t read a lot of the sports, because I think people sometimes either build it up, or you have this guy that hates sports that is going to write bad about it, so I figure I’m not going to read it. Because I’m not going to let him put an idea into my head.
Not everyone likes sports. Gandhi and Malcolm X come to mind.

For me, growing up, I’d always been a part of team sports, except for when I was boxing.
The crowd makes the ballgame.
If you meet the Buddha in the lane, feed him the ball.
When I’m doing sports, I don’t feel anything at all. I enjoy the moment. It’s a safe haven. But once you try to let someone inside your soul, you become vulnerable. You have to be comfortable in your own skin. I don’t open myself up like that to a lot of people. It takes courage.
When it comes to women, there has been a tendency to define women in sports in the context of their relationships – they watch games because their husbands watch. They’re interested because their kids play a sport. They buy tickets to a sporting event because it’s a way to spend time with family.
I’m a sports idiot – watching it, playing it, making conversation about it – I got nothing.
I guess there is nothing that will get your mind off everything like golf. I have never been depressed enough to take up the game, but they say you get so sore at yourself you forget to hate your enemies.
In the sports world it’s all about argument. It’s all about having a hot take. The other person has to have the polar opposite opinion, and you bash them together. To me it is an outlier to have a conversation be the basis of why you are listening.
When a sports team is doing well in a city that’s going through tough times like New Orleans, like Detroit, it bolsters this real sentiment of ‘we can get through this.’ And when you have that sentiment, it becomes more than feelings: It’s transported into action.
